Since 2009 Europe’s most successful communication campaign around „the 3 big R“ – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle finishes the year with thousands of public actions thriving for one common goal: show alternatives to our throw away societies, present new projects and ideas around the waste hierarchy and to sensitize for a stronger resource protection. The next European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) will take place from 19th till 27th of November 2016. The prevention thematic days will focus on the topic of packaging waste. In Germany the EWWR is part of the German waste prevention program. The German Council of Sustainability 2016 honored the EWWR as one of the most outstanding sustainability projects. A network of actors from different sectors such as the economy, public administration, politics and civil society emphasizes the necessity to treat waste prevention with the highest priority. The concentration on improved recycling systems as such is not leading to a circular economy in Europe. The problem of littering is inevitably connected to the topic of waste reduction. That’s why each year in spring time the campaign Let’s Clean Up Europe takes place. Littering is an international problem, which asks for supra-regional solutions. Let’s Clean Up Europe is active in 21 countries all over Europe and beyond. In 2016 it involved around 500.000 people through clean up actions. Many German regions, municipalities and groups are actively participating.
